FULL BORE RIFLE CAPTAIN
The Club holds a monthly shooting event at The National Rifle Association ranges at Bisley (Surrey) These days are run with the aim of getting as many members as possible participating and progressing to their own level of achievement. These events are normally booked for the last Thursday in each month, the Christmas shoot being the usual exception (first week of December). During the milder months (May to October) we concentrate on events for Target and Match rifle.
Full-Bore Target Rifle Shooting events are held at ranges from 300 to 1000 yards, at paper targets. Firing is done in the prone position with the aid of a sling to support the rifle. Most Full-bore target rifles are 7.62mm Cal. (.308 WIN) and the rifles are single shot bolt actions. They have open aperture back sights; the use of telescopic aiming aids is not permitted. A telescope is permitted to spot the fall of shot. The Targets vary in size at each range but the Bulls-eye has a diameter of 5.5" at 300 yards and only 24" at 1000 yards! about the size of a dustbin lid. The ranges are open to all weathers, with the effect of the wind sometimes causing the bullets deflection by up to 20ft at 1000 yards. The other common calibre for Target rifles is 5.56 mm (NATO SS109). Match rifle is for those who like to use telescopic sights; and is shot on the same days target as Target Rifles, indeed many people alternate between the two disciplines as the day progresses. It should be noted the club championship is shot with target rifles with a calibre of 7.62mm. During the colder months (Nov to April) the events are more varied. "Shoot what you bring" events on Short Siberia (100-200 yds) and Full bore gallery rifle on Melville for example. The committee is always looking for suggestions and new ideas. The club owns 7.62mm target and .357" gallery rifles (and will provide for purchase - ammunition), this is normally available for any member who wants join in. A call, giving me prior notice, (if club ammo is wanted) would not go amiss!!! Novice members will be taken through sight adjusting, plotting scores, And the real tricky bit -- reading the wind. Guests are welcome at the events, even novice ones. The rules are simple: One shooting guest per visit Tell the range officer about your guest when signing on, - depending on the days event there may be special instructions that need to be adhered to. You must take responsibility for them at all times and must undertake direct supervision on a "ONE TO ONE" basis should they wish to shoot. Green fees are £5, but are waived for the first visit. Regretfully all guests must be at least 14 yrs old. Most people find this a good day out, the weather is usually kind to us, so what are you waiting for? Come and have a go!
I will be posting the coming events and changes here so keep checking the Diary page: Results for the Monthly Shoots can be found here, but results for the Club Competitions will be posted in the Hall of Fame.
